What is the Layar Browser?
The Layar Browser is a free application on your mobile phone which shows what is around you by displaying real time digital information on top of reality through the camera of your mobile phone (iPhone 3GS or Android).
On top of the camera image (displaying reality) Layar adds content layers. Layers are the equivalent of webpages in normal browsers. Just like there are thousands of websites there will be thousands of layers. One can easily switch between layers by selecting another via the menu button.
Layar is an ecosystem
Layar helps end-users to make sense of their surrounding. To find things out or find something that they didn't know. And also to get fun experiences, in 3D and with interactivity.
Developers get a platform to make 3D experiences and produce point of intrest layers for others. Like a web agency who develops websites. Layar doesn't ask a cut of the the income. The development of layers on the platform is at no cost.
Brands get the new context relevant channel to their potential and existing customers. For indepth engagement or for marketing as a service. To add value.
Operators and Device Manufactures get a great added value to their endusers and can distinguish themselves from competitors by offering unique exclusive layers on their device or network. Next to the access to all the content on the network.
Track Record
In less then 8 months there are over 1500 developers developing layers, over 300 layers are available from Yellow Pages, MasterCard, Trulia, to McDonalds and more. Over a 1.000 are in development. Distribution and reach is ensured through the Android Market and Iphone App store, Also with deals in place with Samsung and more manufactures and operators on the way.
Business Model
Layar makes its money by helping content owners get more traffic through prominence programs.
The latest addition is the ability to add 3D objects and interactivity to layers enabling engaging in-depth experiences. Key examples are a Beatles tour in London and the Architecture layer in Rotterdam.
